Like Magic, the game relies on generating a resource – mana – which builds and recharges each turn, and is expended when you summon creatures or cast spells. The five civilizations – Light, Water, Darkness, Fire, and Nature. You might notice that this isn’t a particularly good marketing plan – making a card game one expects their players to grow out of! The fact that they called it Duel Masters – very evocative of Yu-Gi-Oh!’s ‘Duel Monsters’ – caused many to dismiss it as a cheap cash-in and rip-off before giving the game a chance. There are numerous similarities between Duel Masters and Magic the five colours of Magic map fairly well onto the five civilizations of Duel Masters, and many mechanics are shared across both games. Originally, it seems like the intention of Wizards of the Coast – the creators of Duel Masters – was to provide children and teenagers a simple, easy-to-understand card game that would encourage them to play Magic: the Gathering when they had outgrown it. That digital game we are working on has a real name now: Magic: The Gathering Arena! Masters was a card game that never really got a chance to shine released in the west in 2004 during the height of the Yu-Gi-Oh! and Pokemon TCG crazes, for many, Duel Masters seemed like just another cheap attempt at cashing in on a children’s fad. Who knows – it may not even follow typical Magic: The Gathering themes and mechanics set by other games like Duels of the Planeswalkers and Magic: Duels. To many fans, it’s taking the place of Magic Duels, but whether it’s actually similar to any previous games is still up in the air. Platforms that will be supported have yet to be announced, so no idea if there is even a PC release headed our way. That’s pretty much all we know about the game so far, actually. Whether or not this new game is Arena itself or is just part of the overall product line, is unknown. Wizards also announced a partnership with Cryptic Studios – the team behind Neverwinter – to create a Magic-themed MMO game. Amonkhet was the most recent set to be released for Duels, Duels has been available as a F2P game since July 2015. It was originally planned that the most recent set, Hour of Devastation, was to be ported to Duels, but it was cancelled in June. A few months ago, Wizards of the Coast announced that Stainless Games’ Magic: Duels was being discontinued.
